CAAS Delegation Visits Three European Countries for Multilateral and Bilateral Cooperation
From June 20 to 29, Prof. Wu Kongming, President of CAAS, led a delegation to Switzerland, Romania and Italy, to strengthen CAAS's cooperation mechanisms and platforms with partner institutions, promote multilateral and bilateral cooperation through joint laboratories, and deepen collaborative research with multinational companies. Consensus was reached on establishing institutional cooperation, enhancing existing innovation platforms, strengthening South-South and Tripartite Cooperation (SSTC), information and knowledge sharing, talent cultivation, and capacity building. The delegation successfully completed its mission.
In Switzerland, the CAAS delegation visited the World Trade Organization (WTO), Syngenta Group, and the Swiss Centre of the CAB International (CABI). The delegation engaged in discussions with the leaders of these institutions on topics such as agricultural trade negotiations, sanitary and phytosanitary measures, biosafety, and application of biotechnology in breeding, etc. Cooperation intentions were reached in areas including China-Africa agricultural technology cooperation, North African cotton cooperation, modern seed industry innovation, green plant protection, scientific and technical information and literature exchange, personnel exchange, and capacity building.
In Romania, the CAAS delegation visited the University of Agronomic Sciences and Veterinary Medicine of Bucharest and the Romanian Academy of Agricultural and Forestry Sciences. Meetings with the institution leaders reviewed the history of cooperation in facility agriculture, horticulture and fruit trees, animal production and veterinary medicine, and germplasm exchange. The discussions focused on enhancing bilateral understanding and strengthening global partnerships particularly through the Global Forum of Leaders for Agricultural Science and Technology (GLAST). Consensus was reached on further cooperation in scientist exchange, talent cultivation, and information sharing. During the visit, the delegation attended the unveiling ceremony of the China-Romania Joint Agricultural Cooperation Laboratory and signed a Memorandum of Understanding on scientific and technological cooperation with the Romanian Academy of Agricultural and Forestry Sciences.
In Italy, the delegation visited the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the World Food Programme (WFP). In discussions with Dr. Qu Dongyu, Director General of FAO, both sides agreed to leverage the FAO-CAAS innovation platform to serve agricultural science and technology innovation and South-South cooperation, and jointly support the G2P international mega science project. During the meeting with the head of WFP, both parties reached consensus on establishing stable institutional cooperation, building a knowledge-sharing platform, and jointly organizing or participating in important conferences.
Throughout the visit, the CAAS delegation had the honor of being received by China's Permanent Representative to the WTO, Chargé d'Affaires at the Chinese Embassy in Switzerland, Chinese Ambassador to Romania, Permanent Representative to the UN Food and Agriculture Agencies, and Chinese Ambassador to Italy.
