The 2025 Global Forum of the Group on Earth Observations (GEO) was held in Rome from May 5 to 9 under the theme "The Earth Talks." The forum included the 20th GEO Plenary (including a ministerial roundtable), the 66th Executive Committee meeting, community events, and an exhibition of Earth observation achievements.

GEO is currently the largest intergovernmental cooperation organization in the field of Earth observation, established in 2005. It consists of 117 member countries (116 countries and the European Union) and 157 participating organizations. This year marks the 20th anniversary of GEO, as it moves towards the third decade of achieving global Earth intelligence goals. Over 600 delegates from the joint chair countries of the European Union, the United States, South Africa, the GEO Secretariat, member countries, participating organizations, and associated organizations attended the forum. Deputy Minister Chen Jiachang from the Ministry of Science and Technology of China, as the GEO China Co-Chair, led the Chinese delegation at the meeting. 83 representatives from 8 departments of the Chinese inter-departmental coordination group participating in GEO, 14 research institutions, and enterprises attended various activities at the global forum.

Director General of the Institute of Agricultural Resources and Regional Planning (IARRP) of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS), Wu Wenbin, representing the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs as a member of the Chinese interdepartmental coordination group participating in GEO, attended the forum. He presented the results related to the global ecological and environmental remote sensing monitoring report "Global Ecological and Environmental Changes in Major Deserts and Surrounding Areas in 2024," shared the latest research progress of the institute in global desertification remote sensing monitoring and climate change impact assessment, and shared a series of ecological and environmental data products for major deserts and surrounding areas globally.

He also engaged in discussions with representatives from relevant member countries, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification, the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis, and other participating organizations on promoting international cooperation in remote sensing monitoring and assessment of global degraded lands. The Innovation Team of Grassland Ecology and Remote Sensing prepared the report. Chief Scientist Yu Qiangyi from the Innovation Team of Smart Agriculture also joined the delegation at the forum.
