CAAS Participates in the G20 International Workshop on Water, Energy, Food Nexus

As one of the actions for the Ninth Meeting of G20 Agricultural Chief Scientists (MACS2020), the International Virtual Workshop on Water, Energy, Food Nexus was held on August 31, 2020. At the invitation of Prof. Suliman Ali Alkhateeb, Chair of Saudi MACS, Prof. Nie Fengying, Deputy Director-General of the Agricultural Information Institute, and Prof. Gong Daozhi, Institute of Environment and Sustainable Development in Agriculture, CAAS, participated in the workshop and made presentations respectively. Sixty-two participants from G20 member states and invited international organizations joined this event.


The Workshop aims to share research, applications, and experiences on the water, energy and food nexus among G20 member states, and to secure the supply of these resources by strengthening synergies and reducing trade-offs among these sectors. It was expected that the workshop promotes practitioners, researchers and policymakers to think beyond sectors to ensure access to water, energy and food for all.


The Workshop consists of three sessions: nature-based and science-based solutions to protect ecosystems and enhance resource use efficiency for sustainable food system at a global scale; innovative tools and system approaches to optimize agricultural food production and reduce losses; and bridging the gap of public policy development through private sector water, energy, food nexus innovations. Prof. Gong Daozhi presented in the first session. He introduced the climate smart practices for sustainable crop production and the successful stories in northern China. Prof. Nie Fengying presented in the second session. She highlighted the achievement of nutrition improvement of vulnerable people and China’s policy and importance of collaboration of different sectors. She also stressed the application of a food system approach in research, in private sector decision making, and in policy making.


Dr. Hao Weiping, Deputy Director General of Department of International Cooperation of CAAS, and other researchers from Agricultural Information Institute and Institute of Environment and Sustainable Development in Agriculture of CAAS attended the workshop.
