CAAS Research Breakthrough on Avian Influenza Virus listed in the 2013 Top 10 S&T Progress News
The 2013 Top Ten News on S&T Progress of China, voted by academicians of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE), was released on Jan 24. CAAS breakthrough on avian influenza virus research was on the list and another achievement in breeding and application of new anti-verticillium wilt varieties won the nomination.
The research on avian influenza virus, led by Prof. Chen Hualan, Harbin Veterinary Research Institute (HVRI, CAAS), reveals the high risks of prevailing among humans after mutations of H7N9 virus during their replication in human host. It provides an important basis for prevention and control of avian influenza H7N9.The results was published online on the Science journal on July 19, 2013.
The breakthrough on the breeding and application of new anti-verticillium wilt varieties was achieved through 26-years efforts by experts from Institute of Agro-Products Processing Science and Technology (IAPPST) and Institute of Plant Protection (IPP). The planting area of the new variety has reached 55.8 million mu (about 3.72 million hectares) generating economic benefits over 10 billion Yuan.
