IEDA Participates in EU Horizon 2020 Programme
Recently, the “Coordination of International Research Cooperation on Soil Carbon Sequestration in Agriculture” (CIRCASA) under the EU Horizon 2020 Programme , applied by the Innovation Team of GHG Emission, Mitigation and Carbon Sequestration, and the Innovation Team of Environment Engineering for Livestock of the Institute of Environment and Sustainable Development in Agriculture (IEDA) of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS), obtained the approval from the EU. The objective of this project is to strengthen agricultural soil carbon sequestration, evaluate the role of soil carbon sequestration in mitigating and adapting to climate change, and improve the capacity to address climate change, through cooperation and communication between scientists from different countries.
CIRCASA has 23 participating units from Europe (12 units), US, Russia, New Zealand (2 units), Australia, Brazil, Madagascar, Colombia, Nigeria, South Africa and China. The implementation of this project will last for 3 years (2018-2020), and it will be chaired by Prof. Jean-Francois Soussana from the French National Institute for Agricultural Research (INRA). Prof. Dong Hongmin from IEDA is appointed as the project leader of the Chinese side. The main research tasks assigned to the Chinese side include: 1) analyzing technical measures and their effects on promotion of carbon sequestration in soil; 2) analyzing technology and knowledge requirements to increase soil organic carbon storage; 3) finding out challenges in increasing the carbon sequestration in soil; 4) working out a strategic research plan for increasing the carbon sequestration in soil. Supporting units from the Chinese side include Heilongjiang Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Henan Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Hunan Academy of Agricultural Sciences, and Shandong Minhe Biotechnology Co., Ltd.
The “Horizon 2020 Programme” is the biggest-ever program of scientific research and innovation in the history of EU. IEDA of CAAS has long been engaged in research on agricultural greenhouse gas emissions, reduction & carbon sequestration. Carrying out agricultural soil carbon sequestration research with the most excellent research teams from Europe and other countries will be a great opportunity for the innovation teams of IEDA to lean advanced technologies and gain valuable experience from these countries and to raise their research level, and it will introduce China’s agricultural policies and measures for tackling climate change to other countries.
