Construction and Application of Integrated Management Strategy for Crop Cyst Nematodes

Source : Institute of Plant Protection

The cereal cyst nematodes (Heterodera avenae, H. filipjevi and H. elachista) cause severe yield loss to cereal crops and threaten food security in China. The Innovation team for Plant Nematode Disease Epidemiology and Management from the Institute of Plant Protection (IPP) of Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS) has made great achievements in addressing nematode problems in the last twenty years by collaborating with other research groups. Hence, the team received the Outstanding Scientific and Technological Innovation Award of CAAS in 2017.

The team mainly focuses on developing rapid diagnosis, studying the occurrence, population dynamics and dissemination, pathotypes of nematodes, screening for resistance and its evaluation, and establishing management strategies for nematode diseases. Two new pathovars of H. filipjevi, H. elachista were identified and recorded. Seven new distribution areas of H. avenae on wheat and barley in China were located. The team has made numerous progress on clarifying the occurrence, dissemination and hatching mechanism of cereal cyst nematodes, developing rapid molecular diagnosis techniques, and formulating local standards of cyst nematode control techniques, prediction and prevention of nematodes in different ecology areas. Integrated pest management and control system for cyst nematodes have been developed based on agricultural techniques, resistant varieties and combined use of biological and chemical pesticides. These techniques have been demonstrated to be very effective for controlling cyst nematodes of cereal crops in China.

From 2010 to 2015, the team has published 131 papers, obtained 10 national invention patents and established 4 local technological standards. In total, application areas of the integrated nematode management technology in China reached to 1.83 million ha, at the same time, the wheat yield increased by 10%-20%, and the income of farmers increased by CNY 1.669 billion. These achievements have brought remarkable economic, social and ecological benefits in China.
