On January 17th, 2018, Forum on Agricultural Cooperation in Support of the Belt and Road Initiative, hosted by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and organized by Center for International Agricultural Research (CIAR) of Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS), was held in Beijing.

“The aim of collaboration with FAO is to maximize the poverty alleviation and rural development impact of the Belt and Road Initiative. The Belt and Road Initiative involves huge investments in transportation and communications infrastructure. Matching these investments with much smaller investments supporting well designed complementary measures, the Belt and Road Initiative can make very substantial poverty alleviation achievements.” said Vincent Martin, FAO Representative in Beijing in his keynote statement at the opening ceremony. “FAO is well positioned to provide the technical expertise to support the rural development goals of the Belt and Road Initiative, but putting that expertise to work effectively will require the joint efforts of many parties.”

Ma Hongtao, Deputy Director General of Department of International Cooperation of the Ministry of Agriculture (MOA), delivered a keynote statement on behalf of the Ministry. She introduced the situation of China's agricultural cooperation with FAO under the Belt and Road Initiative. And she expressed that MOA is willing to work with FAO to better promote agricultural cooperation among countries and regions along the Belt and Road so as to jointly contribute to the goals of sustainable development in 2030, building a community of a shared future for the mankind.

During the forum, more than 160 government officials, academics and executives from different sectors discussed opportunities for agricultural cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative in the areas of promoting inclusive value chain development, bringing innovation to the field through e-agriculture, control of trans-boundary animal and plant diseases through the One Health approach, as well as discussion on innovation and partnership. These are areas in which FAO has expertise and which are also important to the success of the Belt and Road Initiative.

Dr. Nie Fengying, Deputy Director of CIAR-CAAS, delivered a concluding remark. She believes that this conference is closely linked to academic frontiers of agricultural economics and policy needs. At the same time, there were many enterprises participating in the conference and friendly relationships were established. Accredited by MOA as one of the Technical Support and Training Bases for International Agricultural Cooperation in 2017, CIAR has actively mobilized and coordinated various resources to establish a communication and exchange platform and a long-term cooperation mechanism for the promotion of the agricultural cooperation and the support of the Belt and Road Initiative.

In the end, Vincent Martin announced that FAO plans to establish an agricultural innovation and partnership center to coordinate FAO and other partners in jointly promoting agricultural cooperation and development.
