Vice President Li Jinxiang Meets with Zambian Agricultural Co-operative Alliance Delegation
On May 31, Mr. Li Jinxiang, Vice President of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS) met with Mr. James Chiva, General Manager of Zambian Agricultural Co-operative Alliance, and his delegation. The two sides held talks on veterinary biotechnology products and the establishment of collaborating centre between China and Zambia.
Mr. Li Jinxiang expressed that several CAAS affiliated institutes are engaged in the fields of research of prevention and control of animal epidemics, veterinary medicine and animal breeding, and CAAS itself boasts the state-of-the-art biosafety laboratories and research facilities. CAAS has long been enjoying extensive collaborative relations with universities and research institutions at home and abroad, and has rich experience on research and development of veterinary biotechnology products, mature technology for animal epidemics prevention and control, and advanced equipment for veterinary vaccines and veterinary medicine production with its products and technologies exporting to many other countries in the world. Li pledged technical support for Zambia in establishing collaborating centre for veterinary biotechnology product while promising collaboration in combating foot-and-mouth disease, African swine fever, ticks, wild animal epidemics, and joint-development of dewormers. Li also suggested that the two sides should jointly seek funding support from multiple channels including the World Bank and international organizations in advancing the construction of the collaborating centre.
Mr. James Chiva thanked his Chinese host for the promised support. He said that Zambian animal husbandry has been plagued by infectious diseases of foot-and-mouth disease and African swine fever without capability for vaccine R&D and veterinary medicine production. Thus, through the collaboration with CAAS, he hoped to build up the R&D and production capability of veterinary biotechnology products and epidemics prevention medicine of Zambia, obtain advanced facilities and equipment, and have Chinese counterpart provide training for local technicians and researchers as well. He also proposed joint development in natural honey and fishery industry, in which Zambia enjoys abundant resources.
Mr. Li Zirui, Deputy Director of Institute of Special Animal and Plant Sciences, Mr. Chanda Casoro, Executive Secretary of Eastern Province Government, and Mr. Jonah Sinkara, Director of Veterinary Medicine Department under the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock of Zambia attended the meeting.
After the meeting, the delegation visited Institute of Special Animal and Plant Sciences and Harbin Veterinary Research Institute of CAAS.
