Recently, the initiating meeting of EU “Horizon 2020” project “Sino-European innovative green and smart cities (SiEUGreen)” was convened in Oslo, Norway. Almost 50 delegates from Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU), Norwegian Institute of Bioeconomy Research (NIBIO), the Institute of Vegetables and Flowers of Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (IVF-CAAS), Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS), and a total of 19 academic institutions and companies from Norway, China, Germany, Sweden, Denmark, Belgium, Switherland, Turkey and Greece participated in this meeting. The delegates actively exchanged the common challenges faced by China-EU on urban development and had in-depth discussion in multilateral cooperation mechanisms, action and implementation plans in China and the EU. On the meeting, the Chinese director of this project, Prof. Jiang Weijie from IVF-CAAS, addressed a speech on behalf of six organizations from Chinese side.

This project was initiated by NIBIO and IVF-CAAS on the basis of more than ten years sustained cooperation. The NMBU as a key partner has provided lots of novel ideas and suggestions. The project aims at strengthening the exchange of technologies and concepts related to sustainable urban agriculture between the EU and China. The scientific research achievements of this project can bring positive benefits to both EU and China, as well as the development of Polar Silk Road and Polar Agriculture.

Through the multi-level cooperation among China-EU scientific research institutions, enterprises and communities, a “bridge” of exchanging and sharing of relevant knowledge and technological experience between China and Europe will be established. It will provide a platform of technical support and international exchange and cooperation, to enhance the development of urban agricultural industry in China.

This project is jointly organized and funded by the European Union’s Scientific Research Directorate and the Ministry of Science and Technology of China (MOST). EU funded 7 million Euros and MOST will provide the counterpart funding to support the project accordingly. The “Horizon 2020” plan is based on research projects and focuses on the study of international frontiers and competitive scientific and technological difficulties. It is a strategic tool of EU to implement innovation policies. The mission of the plan is to help scientific research and business entities to realize research and innovation ideas, to achieve new discoveries, breakthroughs and innovations in research, and to promote the commercialization of new technologies.
