IGR-CAAS holds the Workshop on Restoration and Protection of Grassland Ecosystem in Xilinhot
The Institute of Grassland Research of Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (IGR-CAAS) successfully held the workshop on “Restoration and Protection of Grassland Ecosystem’’ during June 19 to June 21, 2018 in Xilinhot, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, China. Besides scientists from IGR-CAAS, representatives from University of Manchester, UK; Lancaster University, UK; Research Institute of Animal Husbandry, Mongolia; China Agricultural University, Inner Mongolia University, Beijing Normal University, Zhejiang University, and Southwest University of China were participating in the workshop as well as the President of the British Ecological Society. Officials from Department of Agriculture and Animal Husbandry of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, Department of Science and Technology of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, and Research Office of People’s Government of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, were also present at the workshop.

The workshop promoted the communication of research progress among grassland ecologists on the techniques of restoring degraded grasslands, with extensive discussion on the scientific approaches of protecting the grassland ecosystem. Some of the crucial issues were addressed including carbon sequestration, sustainable management of grassland soils, impact of climate change on grassland, trend of grassland management in China, response of grasses to different grazing intensities, grassland proteomics, fertilization and GHGs emission from grasslands, and the need to strengthen stakeholders’ incentives to improve grassland management. In addition, research posters on latest results of scientific studies were displayed during the workshop, which stimulated further discussions among the participants.
After the presentation and discussion sessions, participants were guided to a field trip to the Xilingol typical grassland grazing experiment station of IGR-CAAS, where different ongoing and accomplished experiments on grassland ecology were introduced to the guests. Another field trip was guided to grassland ecosystem restoration station of IGR-CAAS which demonstrates the need to further strengthen efforts on conducting evidence-based research on techniques of restoring degraded grassland ecosystem, mitigating GHG emission, and promoting rangeland health and biodiversity.
