CNRRI Holds the CORRA 21st Meeting in Hangzhou
Co-organized by China National Rice Research Institute (CNRRI) of Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS) and International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), the 21st Annual Meeting of Council for Partnerships on Rice Research in Asia (CORRA) was held in Hangzhou during September 19th to September 22nd, 2017. Dr. Cheng Shihua, Director General of CNRRI and Chairperson of CORRA 21st meeting, Dr. Hu Peisong, Deputy Director General of CNRRI, Dr. Matthew Morell, Director General of IRRI, Dr. Jackie Hughes, Deputy Director General of IRRI, Dr. Zhang Huijie, Deputy Director General of Department of International Cooperation of CAAS, together with other 36 delegates from IRRI and its 14 member countries in Asia, presented the meeting.
In the opening ceremony, Dr. Cheng Shihua delivered warm welcome to all the delegates presented at the meeting. He emphasized that since the establishment of CORRA in 1996, it has been an important platform for information exchange of rice technology between Asia’s major rice producers and consumers. At present, the emergence of global challenges such as climate change, resource scarcity and urbanization poses threat to world food security. It is time for CORRA’s member countries to enhance bilateral and multi-lateral cooperation in rice science and technology.
During the meeting, ways to improve cooperation and exchange in rice science and technology are focused. The main issues for discussion include International Cooperation in Agricultural Research and Development under Belt and Road Initiative, The 2017-2025 IRRI Strategy, ASEAN +3 Rice Breeding and Genetics Initiative, Promoting Regional Cooperation in Rice Science and Technology in South and SE Asia, Capacity Development & IRRI Education, CNRRI Strategy for Rice Sector Development and International Cooperation, etc. Based on in-depth discussion and effective negotiation, member countries presented at the meeting agreed and signed declarations of ASEAN + 3 Rice Breeding and Genetics Initiative.
During their stay in Hangzhou, delegates also visited CNRRI affiliated State Key Laboratory of Rice Biology, Rice Product Quality Inspection & Supervision Testing Center of MOA, National Mid-term Gene Bank for Rice and Phytotron. Some of CNRRI developed varieties and technologies are also introduced during the visit.
