On July 4, 2017, Prof. Tang Huajun, President of CAAS met with Mr. Grainger-Elwen Jones, Executive Director of CGIAR and his delegation. The two sides exchanged views on further cooperation and held consultations on China's permanent membership in the CGIAR.

Prof. Tang congratulated Mr. Grainger-Elwen on his election as executive director after the CGIAR system reform. He stated that bilateral cooperation has yielded fruitful results since China joined CGIAR. CGIAR has promoted the development of agricultural S&T in China through the provision of germplasm resources and personnel trainings. With the tightening of resources, environment and other agricultural development constraints, agricultural S&T innovation is becoming crucial important to ensure food security. Under the "the Belt and Road" Initiative, the two sides are expected to fully mobilize resources and explore multiple channels, thus making new contributions to global agricultural development.

Mr. Grainger-Elwen said that after more than 40 years of development, CGIAR has undergone several reforms and the role of its member states is varying as well. China has been transformed from an initial recipient country into a partner. It is hoped that China will take more leading roles in CGIAR. He suggested that China should take part in a series of global activities organized recently to further enhance the network of partnerships and global influence.

Established in 1972 and headquartered in Montpellier France, CGIAR is the world's largest international organization specializing in agricultural research. China formally joined CGIAR in 1984. Authorized by the Ministry of Agriculture, Chinese Academy of Agriculture Sciences (CAAS) has been taking the role of leading cooperation between national units and CGIAR.

Dr. Gong Xifeng, Director General of International Cooperation of CAAS, and other officials attended the meeting. Dr. Shenggen Fan, Director General of International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) accompanied the visiting.
