The 2nd International Agricultural Research Conference Successfully held in Beijing

On September 26th, 2018, the 2nd International Agricultural Research Conference, co-organized by the Center for International Agricultural Research (CIAR) of Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS), the Department of International Cooperation and Agricultural Information Institute (AII) of CAAS, was held in Beijing. A total of 350 domestic and foreign representatives attended the conference, including representatives from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, the Ministry of Commerce, the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Ministry of Finance, the Development Research Center of State Council, the Global Alliance for Agricultural Big Data Information Service, the Global Forum on Agricultural Research, Gates Foundation and so on. Mr. Zhang Hecheng, Secretary of the Leading Party Group of CAAS, met with Chinese ministerial officials attending the Conference and expressed appreciation for their support. Dr. Wu Kongming, Vice President of CAAS and Director General of the Expert Committee of the CIAR delivered warm welcome to the heads of international organizations, i.e. GFAR, FARA and AGRA.

Mr. Sui Pengfei, Director General of the Department of International Cooperation of MARA, Mr. Shen Xiang, Deputy Director General of the Department of Western Asia and Africa of MOFCOM, Mr. Zhao Xinli, Deputy Director General of the China Science and Technology Exchange Center, and Dr. Mark Holderness, the Executive Secretary of Global Forum on Agricultural Research delivered the opening remarks. At the opening ceremony, Dr. Wu Kongming gave a report of CIAR on its achievements and progress in 2018.

Mr. Sui Pengfei pointed out that international agricultural research should reflect the elements and themes of the new era, keep in accordance with the rural revitalization strategy, the Belt and Road initiative and the global concerns. He suggested CIAR should conduct more targeted research for the needs of the private sectors, increase the intensity of personnel training and play a more positive role in consultation with the government. He reiterated the support from MARA for agricultural international cooperation and shared experience in agricultural overseas investment and trade.

In Dr. Wu Kongming’s report, CIAR formulated a strategic development plan for the period from 2017 to 2022, in which ten major tasks were identified and would be implemented through collaborative innovation mechanism. In 2018, the research departments of CIAR have established more research platforms for cooperation on CAAS’ rice and cotton varieties, sericulture techniques as well as avian vaccines, which were introduced to other developing countries, helping improve global food security and sustainable agricultural development. Wu also said that CAAS will launch the “National Alliance for the Going Global of Agricultural Science and Technology” in the near future.

CIAR published its think-tank research outcomes in 2018, including the reports on agricultural development in China and the cooperation with 65 countries alongside the Belt and Road Initiative, the Global Market Analysis of 19 Agro-Commodities, and the Information Service Platform for Agriculture Going Global Version 2.0.

Twelve speakers from Chinese Academy of International Trade and Economic Cooperation of MOFCOM, Forum for Agricultural Research in Africa, China Investment Corporation etc. delivered speeches on three selected topics: Agricultural Cooperation Policy, Agricultural Science and Technology Cooperation, Global Agricultural Trade and Investment.

Four events were organized by CIAR in concurrent with the CIAR Conference during the week, including the Workshop on Food Security and Global Potato Market Analysis, the International Training Seminar on Agricultural Policy Research, the Workshop China-Africa Agricultural Technology Transfer: Impact, Mechanism and Partnership Building and the G20 Agricultural Chief Scientist Conference-Working Group Seminar on Agricultural Technology Sharing.
