Prof. Mei Xurong, Vice President of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS) met with the visiting delegation from CIRAD (Centre de Coopération Internationale en Recherche Agronomique pour le Développement, known as French
Research and Development Center for Agricultural International Cooperation), led by President Michel Eddi on November 13rd, 2017. The two sides exchanged ideas on further deepening partnership in agricultural science and technology.

Prof. Mei extended a warm welcome to the delegation and gave a brief introduction of CAAS and its latest development. He noted that CAAS has partnership with many French scientific research institutes over the years, such as French National Institute for Agricultural Research (INRA) and French Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health & Safety (ANSES). He expected to deepen mutual understanding and further specified collaboration sectors with mutual interest, especially in areas such as biotechnology and genomics, agricultural sustainability and environment protection, veterinary medicine, food processing and security. Prof. Mei also communicated with the French delegation on how scientific results could drive rural revitalization and agricultural development.

Mr. Michel Eddi agreed with Prof. Mei’s suggestion. He commented that, CIRAD primarily engages in tropical agricultural research and collaboration. He expected to explore the areas for collaboration by drawing on the “Belt and Road” Initiative, co-plan and unfold trilateral agricultural science and technology cooperation with such countries as from Africa and South East Asia. He noted that the two sides have a lot of research orientations of mutual interest, and hoped to establish a flexible and efficient cooperation mechanism with CAAS based on the existing partnership and through building cooperation platform and convening scientists’ summits. All the efforts would be meant for a further agricultural science and technology cooperation between the two sides.

Dr. Gong Xifeng, Director General of the Department of International Cooperation of CAAS, and experts from CAAS Biotechnology Research Institute were present at the meeting.
