NECTAR of Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences founded in Beijing

On August 1st, 2018, National Excellence Center of Root and Tuber Research (NECTAR) of Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS) was founded. Qu Dongyu, Vice Minister of Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs (MARA) and Dr. Tang Huajun, President of CAAS attended the meeting and delivered speeches. The meeting was presided by Chen Mengshan, Secretary of Leading Party Group of CAAS.

Qu Dongyu pointed out that to promote potatoes as the new staple is an important national strategy, which concerns national major strategic deployments including food security, poverty alleviation, rural revitalization, etc. To promote the development of potato industry through S&T innovation is crucial in ensuring China’s food security, improving the quality and efficiency of agriculture and sustainable development. As the national team, CAAS to establish NECTAR marks a significant step to integrate and enhance the whole industrial chain of tuber development. He stressed that NECTAR should enhance integrated efforts with domestic and overseas research institutes at different levels, optimize related resources including science and technology, talents and platform conditions, etc., and carry out the whole-value-chain research of tubers’ breeding, planting and processing, so as to promote the transformation of China from just a big producer into a powerful one. Qu expected that NECTAR would serve “the Belt and Road” Initiative, enhance the scaling up of S&T innovation, and assist realizing poverty alleviation and rural revitalization with tuber industry.

Dr. Tang Huajun noted that the establishment of NECTAR was one of the measures taken to carry out the expectations of President Xi ’s congratulatory letter to CAAS at its 60’s anniversary, while it is also an action serving the national great demands for staple food, as well as a trial to promote national collaborative S&T innovation. CAAS would integrate all its superiorities to support NECTAR, and play a bigger role in tubers S&T innovation for the industrial development.
Dr. Wu Kongming, Vice President of CAAS introduced the details of CAAS, including administration system, research mission, and tubers’ R&D innovation projects that has been conceiving by NECTAR.

NECTAR is a national tuber crops research public platform established on the basis of integrating CAAS research efforts in potatoes and sweet potatoes. Through national collaborative innovation and project-driven mode to realize its joint integration, cross-over study and comprehensive promotion nationally, thus leading to the further development of tuber crops industry in China, and cooperation on R&D and exchanges domestically and internationally. All of these measures will improve the constant innovation capacity of tuber crops in China and promote S&T of tuber, and its products for “going out”.

Delegations from MARA, Ministry of Science and Technology of People’s Republic of China (MOST), National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), as well as relevant universities and research institutes participated in the above activity.
